Auckland Shell Club (Conchology Section, Auckland Museum Institute) |
The State Of Our Club
It is now almost two years since our club constitution was changed and we transitioned to an internet mode of operation.
Almost all our communication and interaction now takes place online at our website and at our Facebook page.
The move online has been quite successful, and our Facebook membership continues to grow.
Many new members from NZ and overseas have joined, and contribute to varied shell related discussions.
Our website continues to provide relatively static club information and resources such as ...
. general club information
. upcoming events
. market place (for sale, for free, or wanted)
. register of largest NZ shells
. club newsletters since Feb/2000
. links to all our online Poirieria magazines
. links to other shell related websites for identification, reference, commerce, etc.
Margaret Morley
It was with much sadness that we farewelled Margaret Morley who passed away in September after suffering ill health for some time.
Margaret will be remembered for her dedication to research and the study of our Marine creatures.
The work she did was important and we all benefited from her contributions at our monthly meetings.
Poirieria Magazine Online
We no longer produce Poirieria magazine, but all our old publications are now available online for viewing or download (PDF format) at http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/bibliography/117415#/summary.
We thank the Biodiversity Heritage Library for their huge effort to achieve this.
Shell Auction
The club held another successful auction on the Saturday of Labour weekend at the Albany Hall.
This year we had 258 lots which as usual included some very rare shells.
It is always good to catch up with members and fellow collectors.
Annual General Meeting - Tuesday 13th December at 7pm
Our AGM will again be held in the Ranfurly Room, Epsom Community Centre, 200 Gillies Ave, Epsom.
The agenda is as follows ...
1. Welcome and apologies
2. President's report
3. Treasurer's report
4. Nominations for Committee Members for 2017
5. New issues and general business
We will then open the floor to anyone who would be willing to give a short presentation on any shell related subject. We welcome contributions from everyone. So far we have ...
. A brief slideshow by Martin Walker of his recent trip to the Philippines. Also he will bring along Tom Eichhorst's new book 'Neritidae of the World' to discuss and for us to have a look at.
. Peter Poortman will talk about non-molluscan shells - Barnacles, Urchins, Brachiopods, & Tubeworms.
Even just a tray of recent additions to your collection would be of great interest to everyone.
This will be a rare opportunity to catch up with friends, share some shelling stories and discuss recent finds.
We will finish the evening with our traditional Christmas supper - everyone please bring a plate.
