October Meeting
We shall be watching a DVD supplied by Solid Energy on the Powelliphanta augustus, the capture of a colossal squid as well as other interesting marine/mollusc based DVD snippets.
If you have any interesting portions of DVDs that we can view on the data projector we would love to see them (please make sure that you are able to locate the relevant piece to view quickly so that no time is wasted in "cueing"). This could include home movies on interesting collecting sites, finds, overseas shell shows, shell markets, etc.
Please bring along any of your shell auction purchases (or a colossal squid from the depths of your collection!) or any shell from the vicinity of China as Peter Poortman will have just returned from a trip over there.
Guaranteed to be another great night on Tuesday, 14th October 2008 at Epsom Community Centre, 202 Gillies Avenue, Epsom where you are welcome to arrive from 7:00 pm on with the meeting commencing at 7:30 pm. As usual, supper shall be supplied.
Shell Auction
Wasn't it fantastic?!?
Another special thanks to Martin Walker for his excellent job at keeping the auction running smoothly.
Thanks to Peter Poortman, Jan Munroe and Gladys Goulstone for their assistance on the bidding table, Luen Jones for his expertise as Treasurer, Martin Walker, Heather Smith, Peter Poortman and Doug Snook for their hours of work behind the scenes getting lots prepared ... and thanks to all of the wonderful people that attended and made the day a real success.
It was a great chance to catch up with all of our out of town members, and also those members who are unable to attend our regular monthly meetings.
Want more? Then prepare yourself for a trip to Wellington on Saturday, 11th October. Shell auction to be held in the 1st floor, Social Hall, The Salvation Army Building, 8 Jessie Street, Wellington City. Viewing from 10.00 am with the auction from 1.00 pm. Postal bidding option available—contact Jan if this would interest you for a lot list and postal bidding form.
Anne Randall : 1920-2008
We note with sadness the passing of former Club Member, Anne Randall.
A member of our club for many years Anne died peacefully at Mt Maunganui on 31st August 2008.
A very keen and active collector for about 40 years, Anne was president of the Christchurch Shell Club in the 1970's and of the Mount Maunganui Club in the 1980's. When Anne could no longer go shelling or join in field trips we sold a part of her large collection at auction. She introduced some of us to the wonder of shelling with a microscope, and we will remember her.
Tribute prepared by Nancy Smith.
Library Acquisitions
The library has a new acquisition - "The AWA Book of New Zealand Science". This wonderful book is made up of vignettes of New Zealand science - memoirs mostly by notable scientists written about particularly important aspects of their career. The book has been gifted to the Club after giving permission to "borrow" an article written by Sir Charles Fleming for the 1981 edition of our Poirieria journal. The article is called "Shell Collecting in the 1920's" and occupies six pages in this fantastic new book. There is also an article by Dr AWB Powell "How to cook Paua". Highly recommended reading—contact Gladys Goulstone if you would like to borrow this book.
