Last Word - Ken Hipkins
The death has occured of one of our earlier Presidents and active club members, Mr Ken Hipkins. Ken served as President of the Conchology Section from 1957-1961. He was particularly interested in minute marine shells and spent most of his holidays dredging in numerous stations along the northeastern coastline and Great Barrier Island. His personal collection was meticulously arranged and labelled. Papers reviewed by Ken and printed in the club bulletin include: 'The Genus Scrobs Watson, 1886', 1955; 'The Genus Rissoina', 1956-57; 'The Columbellidae of New Zealand' 1958-59; 'Notoplax cuneata Suter' 1952; and on the two species which bear his name: Pissina hipkinsi Ponder, 1965, and Exomilopsis hipkinsi, Powell 1964.

Presidents Report
A large number of members attended our last meeting, including a few from out of town who were given a warm welcome! Jenny and Tony Enderby’s lecture and slide show was excellent. The evening was also memorable for the outstanding displays of the evenings feature shell; Xenophoridae.

Committee Meeting
Committee members please note. An important committee meeting will be held prior to the August 10th meeting at 6pm sharp. Please make your own dinner arrangements - hot drinks available.

Next Meeting: Tuesday 10th August 7:30pm.
This will be held in the Ranfurly Room. Epsom Community Centre. 202 Gillies Ave. Please park at the rear of the Centre - entrance is via Kimberly Rd.
There will be two door prizes!

Speaker: This was to be our ‘landsnail’ feature night but unfortunately our scheduled speaker, Brian Parkinson, has advised he will be in Wellington on Tuesday night. Undeterred we press on with the topic and will feature a selection of Brian’s colour slides of land snails. We intend to call on members expertise (plus a little help from the text books!) to identify any snail you may be having difficulty in naming. This promises to be a memorable evening.

Shell Family: Please bring along a selection of NZ or WW land snails from your own collection for discussion and display.

This book is available in book shops now, however copies will be available at the September 14th meeting which will be held at the Auckland Museum in the APEC Room, 7-9pm. Entry by the East door. The evening will feature a celebration for the book and a slide show. The photographs were taken by Iain Anderson.

Book copies signed for added value will be discounted from the retail price of $24.95 to $19.95. Members are asked to assist by providing a plate of finger food for supper. Out of town members who would like a copy of the book at the meeting price should contact Margaret.

Field Trips
Do you have any ideas for locations for field trips in 2005? Our planned trip to Whakatane beaches will take place this summer. Bruce Hazelwood has plans to visit the Hen and Chicken Islands off Northland for a land snail search, and Glenys Stace has plans to revisit sites in the Manukau Harbour. Margaret Morley has suggested that we take a day trip to the Goat Island Marine Reserve, and an excursion out on the glass bottom boat which will be back in service next month. The boat does a circumnavigation of the Island and this should be an interesting trip. More news and the dates next month.
