Newsletter - September 2004

Last word
Joyce Pearce aged 94 years died on 24th September 2004. Joyce was an active member of the Section in her younger years. She was Olive Snook's sister and a fond Aunt of the President, Doug Snook and will be sadly missed by family and her shelling friends.

Recuperating
Mrs Noel Gardner suffered a fall recently and broke a bone in her ankle while working as a volunteer at the Auckland Museum. Norm is attending to the domestic scene.
Jack Godden, Warkworth, is out of hospital now, after cardiac surgery and is on the mend.

President's Report
The Auckland flu epidemic cut a swathe through the membership attending Margaret Morley's book launch at the last meeting held at the Auckland Museum, however Margaret reports that 80 people were in attendance and her book sales soared! It was a wonderful evening by all accounts and she will have copies of her book, NZ Seashells, on sale at the Shell Show for $24.95

Thanks to all members who have worked to make our coming Shell Show a success.
How can you personally help with the final arrangements? It was noted at the last Shell Show that we were very short of members at clean up time. Our organising committee would really appreciate some of our younger fitter members being available to help at the end.

New book
Our Patron, Professor John Morton's new book Seashore Ecology of NZ and the Pacific has also been launched. This is a major work that the Conchology Section has helped sponsor. Copies of the book are available now in the bookshops at $89.95 a copy.

Next Meeting: Tuesday 12th, 7:30pm
The October meeting will be held at the Epsom Community Centre.
There are heaps of reasons why you should not miss the next meeting!! +Door Prizes.
Speaker: Dr. Mike Hart. Mike has a splendid collection of Cypraeidae and an extensive knowledge of this family and will be showing coloured slides and specimen shells.
Topic Shell: Cypraeidae. Please bring along exhibits from your own collections.

Library News
Our Librarian, Gladys Goulstone, reports that both of the above new books have been purchased for the Section's library and are available for loan.

Christmas presents
It's time to think about gifts for your nearest and dearest so why not give copies of the two books above to fill those Christmas stockings. How about gifting an annual membership to the Section - only $20, our lovely new membership badge - only $6.50, or one of the Section's famous tee-shirts. All will be available at the Shell show.
