We invite you to an evening on Confused and Confusing Identities. See if you can solve "Martin's Mysteries":
1. The controversial new cone species Conus glorioceanus, which it is claimed is very like Conus gloriamaris yet NOT related. Well there are at least three sides to this story as you will see.
2. The mysterious bright yellow and/or pink land snails appearing on the land snail market in the last few years (often identified as "Cochlostyla festiva, Papua New Guinea").
Bring along any shells you want identified. The data projector will be there so if you prepare any little presentations or even just some digital pics to accompany your subject, bring them along on a Flash Drive or CD/DVD.
The meeting shall be held at Epsom Community Centre, 202 Gillies Avenue, Epsom on Tuesday 14th July. Feel free to arrive from 7:00 pm onwards with the meeting commencing at 7:30 pm. As usual there will be lucky door prizes (thanks to Doug and Judith Snook), supper, shells for sale and a great chance to catch up with fellow club members. See you there!
June Meeting Summary
For those who were unable to attend our June meeting - you missed a great one!
Tony and Jenny shared about their amazing trip to Patagonia, and the Valdez Peninsula (you may remember this as made famous by David Attenborough where the Orcas mounted the beach to feed). Their footage of Right Whales, Elephant seals and their pups, Orcas, Commerson's Dolphins, Caimans, butterflies, hummingbirds, seabirds, to name a few! was sensational and the running commentary supplied by Tony wonderful to listen to.
Tony and Jenny have served as Editors of the Poirieria Journal for 10 years!
Margaret supplied a card in thanks, and cake, which along with potted flowers and petrol vouchers were presented as a token of our appreciation at the outstanding work this couple have done for the Club over the years.
Remember to mark it in your diaries now: Saturday, 10th October at the Albany Hall.
Many thanks to those that have contacted Jan with regard to lots for the upcoming auction. Actual lot lists are not required until 10th August. If you would like to increase your lot numbers then please let Jan know (email: firstname.lastname@example.org).
We were saddened to hear of the passing of Eric Edmunds a long time member from Tauranga. A card has been forwarded on behalf of the Club to Aileen extending our sympathies.
Our thoughts are also with Heather Smith and her twin sister, Alison following the death of their mother, three weeks short of her 100th birthday. Our condolences to your families.
Please forward your articles by 10th August so that we may finalise this year's edition of the Poirieria.
Many thanks to those that have submitted articles already - it's going to be another "great read"!
Following on from our AGM: We shall be voting on the proposal that the operating name of the Conchology Section Auckland Museum Institute be changed to "Auckland Shell Club", and that the name Conchology Section Auckland Museum Institute be retained as a "sub-brand" as submitted by Martin Walker, seconded by Peter Poortman.
If you have any comments, suggestions, etc that you would like to have tabled/discussed at the meeting concerning this proposal please contact Jan Munroe, Club Secretary prior to the July meeting.
